We have been cleaning render in the Swansea and Llanelli areas for over 12 years. We noticed that the render on many modern houses was dirty and covered in biological growth such as fungus and lichen..
There are several different types of render commonly used in construction in Wales. There are coloured renders such as K-rend Parex and Weber brands. These have colour all the way through the render meaning that painting is unnecessary for the life of the render. However this type of render does benefit from an occasional clean to keep it looking at its best and it will usually come up looking brand new when cleaned properly. Sto type cement render is also very common. This is then generally painted, again this benefits from a clean and often this type of render will come up looking brand-new without repainting.
The climate in llanelli and Swansea area and much of South Wales is very damp, oarticularly in recent years. Biological growth will grow on many natural and man-made surfaces in damp climates. The black staining seen on render is generally fungus. The reddish coloured staining is a species of algae and the green staining is also a type of algae. The good news is that all of these types of staining can be cleaned off quickly and efficiently by us.

We have perfected the use of various chemical treatments to clean and kill off these types of biological growth on coloured render such as K-rend Webber and Parex also painted render and even pebble – or spa dash. However, often more than a chemical treatment alone is required to properly clean rendered walls, when it is very dirty we also employ the use of low pressure steam cleaners and other methods to make sure that we leave your render looking as clean as possible.
When we clean your wall render, we always clean the gutters, soffits and facias above the area because these often have spores from Algie and fungus and water running down them onto the render can quickly recolonise the area.

We also use “leave on” biocide treatments. This can provide some residual protection and retard future growth of algae, so when you ask us to clean your render you know that you will be getting a great finish, good value for money and the best longevity possible for your property.
It is very important that a very gentle low pressure method is used for many types of render because they are very delicate. We know how to properly clean render of all types without causing any unnecessary damage or erosion. Sometimes this low pressure approach is called softwashing. This is a fairly new term to describe using chemicals to do the bulk of the work rather than high pressure. We favour this approach on many surfaces, however this is just one of the tools in our toolbox for achieving great results.
